Volkswagen Toureg Roof Rack
Tough Touring makes a Super Low mount , outward folded roof rack specifically for The Toureg as shown above. The Toureg is a difficult vehicle to fit up RTT as it has a very narrow, swept back roof line, and its difficult to get a rack to sit and look low.. Getting the Rack low also makes it impossible to reach under the tent to get to bolts etc... So our Rack folds outwards at the top edge - sorting this problem.
This rack design Can be set up to allow the roof top tent and planks to be removed from beside the vehicle via 4 Captive bolts each side - Removing the entire set up in minutues and leaving the vehicle with Bare roof and only the rack feet... With Some Tent types, an additional Flush mount kit may be required. (Definatly so with the James Baroud).
So Far these racks have been fitted successfully to 1 Prototype vehicle - so our pictures are pretty basic. See our 'ABOUT US' for details on what the Various Versions of our Development stages mean to fitters going about installation of this rack. The Vital Statistics as follows:
Foot Angle 77
ID 980mm
Roof Rails Length 1750 - MILD CURVE - (Fairly short to allow forward positioning to prevent awning foul on high lift rear door and wind fairing obstruction)
Plank Widths - 1350 (Standard), 1400,1450 or 1550 available
We removed Roof lining on first vehicle -
No airbag Obstruction as long as existing rail mount bolts are re-used.
Unfortunatly they are m6 and not strong enough... SO - DRILL OUT AND NUTSERTS USED.
Rack Foot Attachment method - existing Mount points are m6 - USE SAME HOLES - We Drilled them out to 11mm - then 3mm Nutserts inserted all round - with an exception being the 2nd hole forward from the rear being a 5mm Grip Nutsert as there is a third layer of steel here (Deeper) . Caulk well with Auto SIKKA 221 or 227.
It is reccommended that after fitting and Tightening the bolts on the rack - Anti Slip Bolts are added by drilling through the roof rails into the laser cut foot - then bolting a third bolt on front and rear feet on each side, this will prevent the rails slipping down on the feet when the vehicle rides over heavy impacts. See PIC 2 above - Its the Close up Pic showing the rail, foot and a third hex bolt through the lot - (Tough Touring logo also visible in the pic for reference)
Once feet fitted, Position Roof rail level and Bolt off 2 x m8 Hex bolts in each Foot rail to Roof rail. (6 total each side) - The Rail will now be sitting level, but will need Anit SLIP bolts - 1 at each end. Drill 8mm Hole tp line up with anti slip hole on rack foot and add third m8 Hex bolt - 1 at each end.
V3 of this rack should have pre cut Anti Slip built in (As per other anti slip designs)

Our custom designed rails and crossbars form a super strong, low foundation for your chosen roof top tent and Awning Combination. Capable of handling typical Hardshell Tent loads on Off road environments - The Tough Touring Racks are so low they help reduce wind noise while getting the weight of the touring gear lower also helps reduce body roll and improve vehicle stability.
We would Reccommend Fitment of your awning directly to the side of the roof top tent where possible - As Clearances are tight on most of the vehicles mentioned, and Rack mounted awnings tent to end up Lower overall on The Toureg. Awning to Rack (Independently ) and Beside your roof tent will not work on this vehicle (Too Narrow - Too Low)
Some examples of reccommended fitment of awnings to tent are here - https://www.toughtouring.com.au/tent-to-awning-brackets

WARNING ON Toureg and All ROOF RACKS
Tough Touring has tested and fitted only a few of our racks to Volkswagen vehicles - At time of writing were at V3 of our R&D on this vehicle. To find out more about what that means to you - See our Versions Explanation page here - https://www.toughtouring.com.au/about-1
Before purchasing any roof rack - Check your vehicle roof gutter cavity for roof rack mounting bolt holes... if it doesnt have any - and it has curtain airbags - In Most cases you cant legally fit a rack withou having air bags removed, and VEhicle/Rack fitters will need to remove the roof lining to find safe positions to mount the through bolts required to secure the rack and load.
2020 onward cars can be the worst vehicle to deck out with rtt or pole less awings ... Possibly due to increased Safety requiremtsn, Manufacturers have litterly fillled the cavity space in the roof with airbags... To make life a little harder for Mechanics and Fitters - the roof lining is also moulded / brittle one piece solid foam and is easily damaged when removed... damage is likely duriing roof lining removal...Waivers need to be signed as while all care is taken - These newer vehicles were not built to be modified - and its not fair that mechanics and fitters are asked to do the impossible then face thousands of dollars worth of replacement head linings because they have marked it getting it out. (IT IS NOT MEANT TO COME OUT). It aint easy.
